Advance Decisions Coalition
On 1 May 2010, the General Medical Council provided guidance for doctors on advance care planning for patients nearing the end of life. The guidance emphasises the importance of listening to the patient and recording their treatment choices to ensure that everyone involved in their care can understand and follow their wishes.
We would like to ask all health organisations that work with people at the end of life, and with other health care issues, to join the Advance Decisions coalition, which aims to:
1. Promote patient autonomy and advance care planning through legal tools such as Advance Decisions and Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs);
2. Call for Advance Decisions and LPAs to be recorded on a central register to enable everyone involved in the care of a patient to know what their wishes are.
