Many people travelling in Europe will often assume they don't need travel insurance if they have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). The EHIC card entitles holidaymakers to identical state-provided healthcare as a resident of that particular country, but will not be of any help should repatriation or private treatment be required. With this in mind, EHIC is no substitute for travel insurance, so the likelihood is that if you're taken ill when abroad you will have to ultimately pay for additional costs and then you still have to get home.
